Autopsy (Stryker) Saw Safety

1. Autopsy assistants will be checked for their competence in the use of the saw by the LSUMC (HCS) and Tulane Departments of Pathology before they are allowed to assist with autopsies at the hospital. New house offices are to be trained and checked for their competence in the use of the saw by the respective Pathology Departments. The respective departments will not allow house officers to perform autopsies at the hospital before they are cleared by the chiefs of the autopsy services.

2. The saw is to be checked before use for frayed wire and loose connections. The saw is to be checked for a current biomedical clearance tag before use. Only a 3 pronged plug and socket are to be used. Any frayed wire of loose connection / part will render the saw unusable, and the saw must be sent to the biomedical department for repair.

3. The saw is to be used only when the gloved hands are dry; the user is to make certain that the floor is dry, and under no circumstances is the user to be standing in water.

4. After use, the saw is to be cleaned with a sponge wet with bleach cleaning solution. The saw MUST be unplugged before cleaning.
