Meeting Title: Sexual Harassment

Instructional Objectives:

The employee will demonstrate, by answering the review questions, knowledge of:

* The definition of Sexual Harassment.

* The two kinds of Sexual Harassment

* Examples of behaviors that can create a hostile environment

* The concept that unwelcome conduct or attention is what makes the conduct unacceptable to our organization.

* The need for each person to communicate — either directly or through a supervisor / manager— when behaviors are unwelcome or unwanted.

Instructor:

Attached, find a handout to distribute at this meeting. The handout defines sexual harassment and gives examples of harassment both Quid Pro Quo (which means something given or received for something else) and Hostile environment. Our organization does not tolerate either form of harassment. In addition to responding to complaints, Supervisors and Managers must monitor their environment for hostile indicators and take remedial action to stop the behavior(s). Human resources will assist with remedial action if necessary.

This meeting will help identify unwelcome behaviors and can be used as a tool. Supervisors must see that unacceptable behaviors are immediately stopped and that there is no retaliation in any form (threats, actions or even ignoring the person). It is useful to stress the need for communication — either direct or through a supervisor / manager — in the identification of unwelcome conducts or attention. Also, be mindful that while some employees may enjoy attention or behaviors, others may be find these unwelcome and we must be sensitive to the needs of all employees.

UNWELCOME is the key word:

 

Federal law says that any UNWELCOME SEXUAL CONDUCT OR ATTENTION is sexual harassment. In practical terms there are two kinds of sexual harassment:

 

Where employment decisions or expectations (e.g. hiring decisions, promotions, salary increases, shift or work assignments, performance expectations) are based on an employee’s willingness to grant or deny sexual favors.

  

Examples of Quid Pro Quo harassment are:

1. Demanding sexual favors in exchange for a promotion or a raise.

2. Disciplining or firing a subordinate who ends a romantic relationship.

3. Changing job performance expectations after a subordinate refuses repeated requests for a date.

  

Where verbal or nonverbal behavior in the workplace:

1. focuses on the sexuality of another person or occurs because of a person’s gender.

2. is unwanted or unwelcome.

3. is severe or pervasive enough to affect the person’s work environment.

 

The following are examples of behaviors that can create a Hostile Environment if they are unwanted or uninvited.
