In the event of an exposure to an employee (HCW):
1. Make sure that

  • the exposed HCW has an incident report with documentation of the source patient's name and medical record number.

  • blood on the source patient has been sent for rapid HIV , Hep C antibody and Hep B surface AG.
Note: The results of the rapid HIV test may impact on patient care (i.e starting post exposure prohylaxis (PEP)). Source patient test results are coded with "NS-" before the medical record number and you find the results in the lab computer system using the same code.
    see more detail here.

2. If the exposed HCW is starting PEP, then baseline lab testing is necessary.

You do not need to test the employee for Hep C AB, Hep B immune status and standard HIV test. These are typically performed in Employee Health Services (EHS).

Referring the HCW to Employee Health:
1. Direct the employee to Employee Health Services
on the next available day   (0630-1500h, M-F, Charity Hospital, E607)
2. Make sure that

  • the incident report with documentation of source patient name, MR # and other documentation is placed in the EHS folder on your campus.

  • the employee has adequate HIV PEP medication to cover the period before the employee is seen in EHS (account for weekend and holidays).
