-RBCs that have been ripped or torn against fibrin strands or thrombi in the microcirculation or have been buffeted against unyielding structure in the macrocirculation. -Fragments reseal and persist in the circulation and are highly significant findings on a peripheral blood smear. -Fragments are seen in severe burns, DIC, TTP and other microangiopathic hemolytic processes. |
