Important notes: Universal prenatal screening for vaginal and rectal Group B streptococcal (GBS) colonization of all pregnant women at 35-37 weeks gestation is recommended. The optimum specimen for this test is a vaginal/rectal swab and results may be compromised if only a vaginal swab is submitted. Susceptibility testing is routinely performed only for patients known to be penicillin-allergic; clindmycin and erythromycin will be tested.
